Large Field and Course Record Broken at 4th Penrith Triathlon Sunday saw the fourth running of the Penrith Triathlon at Penrith Leisure Centre, organised by Eden District Council in partnership with Arragon’s Cumbrian Triathlon Club. Amid a lot of hard work and local enthusiasm over 240 participants took part in the event, ranging from national level athletes to event regulars from across the UK and a number of novices giving a triathlon a go for the first time. The overall race winner was Penrith man Jon Fletcher who hauled himself around a blustry route in a superb course record time of 1:05:03 — quick in anybody’s book! Equally impressive was Lizzie Spencer who won the women’s race by 8 minutes in a time of 1:15:25, just under a minute outside the course record. Well done also to Mark Flannery and Karen Bridge for winning the Men’s and Women’s Vet categories and to Paddy Finn and Linda Tweddle for winning the Super Vet categories. The team relay category was won by The Toffee Men, made up Penrith based trio Danny Smith, Neil Boustead and John Mason. Event organiser Jeff Marshall, from Eden District Council’s Leisure Services Team was extremely pleased with how the event had gone: “To have over 240 people take part in an event we set up on a whim in 2008 is absolutely fantastic, it’s a huge compliment to the hard work of all involved that we’ve been able to attract some high calibre athletes from Scotland and the North of England, particularly when they enjoy the event
